Record Name | A possible cist cover slab decorated with multiple cup marks and cups with single rings cup |
Record Description | Previous SWAAG Record 984 records early photographic images of cup and rings on Gayles Moor within the Feldom Army Live Firing Ranges. This Record shows early photographs of a possible cist cover slab and two further rock art sites on Gayles Moor. A palisaded enclosure located in the vicinity of the rock art sites is also shown. The possible cist cover slab is decorated with crowded cups and cups with single rings. This sloping slab is located within the remnant of a low cairn and can be seen to have subsided. This large slab is likely to be a cist cover. If so this slab may well have been turned over when the cairn which originally covered it was slighted many years ago in order to reveal and possibly rob the cist.
Such cist cover slabs are often decorated on both faces. One face (usually the inner face being 'seen' by the corpse) being decorated with complex cup and ring figures the upper face being decorated with multiple simple cups as this rock. |

Additional Notes | The cup and ring marked rocks should not be regarded as isolated curiosities. They usually exist here and elsewhere within landscapes rich in other monuments. For example image 5 below shows the ring groove of a palisaded enclosure located at the centre of the cluster of cup and ring sites on Johston's Allotment on Gayles Moor. This palisaded enclosure or timber post circle is defined by members of a group during a previous field visit to Gayles Moor. A well preserved ring cairn and several small rock cairns are also located within the open cluster of cup and ring marked rocks. |
